From May 1 to May 5, the Chinese National Cancer Center and
the US National Cancer Institute engaged in a high level dialogue on cancer
prevention, precision cancer treatment and minimally invasive surgery in Washington.
Both parties also attended a signing ceremony of strategic cooperation. China
had a delegation of 16 delegates, among which Mr. Zhang Juyang, President of
Xuzhou Cancer Hospital and Dr. Hou Yulong, Vice President of the hospital and
Head of the Division of Thoracic Surgery, as members of the only delegation of
Jiangsu Province, participated in academic exchanges and the signing ceremony.
Academician He Jie, Director of the
Chinese National Cancer Center, and NCI’s Center for Global Health Director
Edward Trimble, signed a cooperation agreement on behalf of the two
institutions. Chinese and American cancer experts who were present there held
an academic discussion on precision medicine for lung cancer, the prevention of
lung cancer and minimally invasive surgery for lung cancer.
At the meeting, Mr. Zhang Juyang, President
of Xuzhou Cancer Hospital, Dr. Hou Yulong, Vice President of the hospital and
experts from the US National Cancer Institute had an in-depth exchange of
views. Mr. Zhang Juyang introduced the Xuzhou Cancer Hospital’s experience in
cancer prevention and treatment and received recognition from US experts.
Xuzhou Cancer Hospital is the only
tertiary institution in the Huaihai Economic Zone. Approved by the Ministry of
Health of the PRC in 2010, the hospital was officially under the technical
guidance of the Cancer Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. Under the
long-term management and technical support, the hospital became a first-class
cancer hospital in China with advanced technologies and management skills. At
the same time, the establishment of the Xuzhou Treatment Center, which is affiliated
with the Cancer Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, together with
the new United Consultation Center of the Huaihai Economic Zone, provides
scientific, standardized, effective and personalized treatment programs for all
types of cancer patients, thus enabling cancer patients from nearby regions to
receive the diagnosis and treatment from first-class experts in China without
making a long journey.
In view of Mr. Zhang Juyang’s
outstanding contribution in the treatment of cancer, NCI’s Center for Global
Health Director Edward Trimble presented him with a prize. Mr. Zhang Juyang
sincerely invited Academician He Jie, Professor Douglas R. Lowy and his team to
visit Xuzhou Cancer Hospital and provide guidance. This invitation was readily
received.
The US-China collaboration starts a new chapter from
standardized treatment
The Chinese National Cancer Center and the US National Cancer Institute are both leaders and pioneers in the field of cancer prevention. The signing ceremony this time marks a cooperation between the two capable institutions and will facilitate further cooperation. With future exchanges in more fields and at more levels, the two institutions are able to achieve win-win situations and common development, thus making more contribution in the fight against cancer.
This was the first time that Xuzhou
Cancer Hospital was invited to participate in such a high-end international dialogue
on cancer. Thanks to its outstanding achievements in the early diagnosis and
treatment of urban cancer patients, the hospital is able to explore and discuss
the latest international cancer research and progress. The hospital provides
world-class precision cancer treatment, lung cancer surgery and esophageal
cancer surgery. It enjoys its unique advantages in treating cancer.
Through this dialogue, two experts
from Xuzhou Cancer Hospital are acquainted with the US experience in cancer
prevention and treatment as well as the sophisticated US practices, wide
publicity and education about preventing cancer in the workplace and cancer
caused by the environment.
President Zhang Juyang said, “In
the treatment of cancer, Xuzhou Cancer Hospital continuously improves its
precision cancer treatment. It focuses on individual differences in
constitution, psychology and occupation. Even when dealing with the same tumor,
it adopts individualized treatment programs. Thanks to the fast development of
the Chinese economy, Chinese medical facilities and equipment are now as
advanced as other countries. Since China has a large population, Chinese
doctors tend to be more experienced after treating so many patients. Therefore,
they are able to conduct more sophisticated surgeries than their international
counterparts.” Dr. Hou Yulong said that through this study, Xuzhou Cancer
Hospital would further introduce advanced targeted therapies and apply them to
clinical treatment. The hospital will promote new drugs and surgical techniques
so as to transform cancer into a controllable chronic disease. In this way,
patients will suffer from less pain and the mortality rate can be reduced.
